SGT. Vernon Leslie Schackmann

Vernon's tour in Vietnam was from October 1965 to 1966 and again in December 1968 to April 1969. Sgt. Schackmann retired after 21 years on January 3, 1973, as Master Sergeant E8.

Vernon Leslie "Les" Schackmann, age 77, of Odin, died on Tuesday, May 5 at his home in Odin. Funeral services for Vernon Schackmann were held at 12:00 on Saturday, May 9 at the Irvin Funeral Home in Odin. Appliance Repairman-Odin S & S Repair Service 23 Years Self Employed, 13 Years Bus Driver For Odin Schools First Baptist Church in Odin, V.F.W. in Centralia, Odin Masonic Lodge # 503, D.A.V. Centralia #76,Eastern Star Sandoval, was past Worthy Patron, Scottish Rite in Belleville, American Legion in Centralia, Original–Golden Rule Lodge at Topeka, KS.

He married Helen Frances Payne Brewer on Aug 16, 1986 at Marshall Creek Baptist Church Odin, IL. Marion county. Their ten children were a vital part of their lives: Vernon Leslie Schackmann Jr., Roberta Louise VanNatta, Tanya Lea Storment, David Andrew Schackmann, Scott Allan Schackmann, Theodore Eugene Brewer, Frances Dee Kramer, Kenneth Lee Brewer, Sueanna Lynn Mosley, and Danita Rene Dameron.

He enter the Masonic Lodge at the Golden rule Lodge in Topeka, Kansas transferring to the Odin Masonic Lodge where he was a past master. He also was a member of the Odin Motorcycle Club. His military service was of special importance to him ; serving from 1952 to 1973 with two tours in Korea, two tours in Viet Nam, also overseas duty in Germany and Baffin Island, Northwest Territory of Canada. He was with the 555 Field Artillery when it was overrun by Red Chinese. He was with the 577th Engineer Battalion at Fort Benning, Ga, then went with the 169th to Long Binh, Viet Nam in 1966. In Oct. 1966 he was assigned to the 4th Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood teaching the scraper course, then moved to the office as operation sergeant. He returned to Viet Nam Co. C 169th in Dec 1968 and was sent for repair and clearing of QL-20. After being air lifted to Osaka, Japan and two spine surgeries he returned to the 4th Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood and was NCOIC of the heavy equipment school. After retiring in 1973 he returned to his home town Odin, Illinois.
